Lost in Yokoisms

With the release of the YoRHa:Dark Apocalypse alliance raid in Final Fantasy XIV the other day, the appearance of the white 2Pーas she is now canonically knownーhas stirred up continued conversation regarding what exactly that “P” in her name could possibly stand for.

First of all, when 2B was originally added as a playable character in SoulCalibur VI, she was merely called “2B”…including her 2nd player pallet swap white version. There was no specific or official name for the white version since, as we all know about fighting games, the 2nd player color swap is only to help differentiate between same characters on the screen, should both the 1st and 2nd player choose to play the same character. However, fans began calling the white version of 2B by “2P”, the name stuck and SQEX later released the white version Bring Arts figure as just that: 2P.

Yesterday, Twitter user Jason X (@envinyon) revived a snippet from an article by SRK that commented on an interview with Dengeki and NieR:Automata development team for the collaboration with Soul Callibur VI. More specifically, though, we’re talking about Yoko Taro’s comments in this interview.

On a general level, the writer for SRK did a decent job of conveying the message from the lengthy interview, but instead of using the original source from Dengeki, it seems like they used a 3rd party account of the matter originally in Japanese. Suffice it to say, there were a few bumps in the road.

▶︎ Yoko says! The P Stands for Panasonic!

Note: “Ryokutya” is an alternate romanization of “Ryokucha,” which commonly translates to “green tea.” Referring to the owner of this blog as a male individual named “Ryo” is done out of mere convenience and serves no other purpose.

There were a couple issues with the text attachment, which was an excerpt from the SRK article.

  1. “While seemingly a joke” — This implies that it sounded like a joke but was actually a masked truth.
  2. “Taro later concludes that the P does stand for that.” — This affirms the previous statement that even though it sounded like a joke, it’s actually true.
  3. “…he mentions how “Panasonic” means…” — This is using an undefined pronoun. The previous time the pronoun “he” was used it referred to Taro, as shown above in point 2; however, assuming this “he” also refers to Taro would be inaccurate. This portion was actually part of Ryokutya’s personal editorial on his own blog.

Without citing the source of the article clipping, it wasn’t readily known what they were referring. After a quick Google search, there appeared to be only a single hit for this excerpt, which turned out to be an article written by Franz “d3v” Co for shoryuken.com on November 29, 2018, roughly a day after the initial release of the Dengeki article.

So then, what’s the hang up?

The problem arrises from the mischaracterization of Ryokutya’s original blog post, which was essentially a second-hand account after reading the article. Without directly utilizing the original article and instead using a 3rd party’s personal account as fact, SRK’s telephone game clearly went awry somewhere along the line.

So, by now, I think it’s clear that SRK took Ryo’s article as a complete review of the original article even though it also included editorial comments spliced in. Without any regard to this, we’re left with misleading information that the “P” in 2P stands for “Panasonic” as stated by Yoko.

But anyone who knows Yoko on a personal, professional, or even fan level should know how tongue-in-cheek he tends to be. He is a master troll. He loves sarcasm and this can easily be confused with a straight truth. His word is massively important to us fans, but we need to view his comments with a grain of salt.

He, himself, told us not to believe anything he says. A world of contradictions exists within a single man.

▶︎ The Word of Yoko Says…

For a closer look at the segment of the interview where Yoko mentions Panasonic as a joke, here is the actual passage directly from the page on Dengeki Online.

At this point in time, there is no official YoRHa Type P designation; however, I seem to recall Yoko stating that there is a type for every letter of the alphabet even if he hasn’t thought of them all yet (this needs a citation!! I can’t remember where I heard this and I can’t seem to find anything about it, so I may have dreamt it up from this tweet).

Whether this memory is accurate or not, it’s absolutely within the realm of possibility for Yoko to create a new P Type model in retrospect specifically for the YoRHa:Dark Apocalypse story. If that is the case, then what P possibilities can you think of?

▶︎ What do you think the P in “2P” stands for?

If we’re going off of the already known YoRHa model types, it will likely begin with a P and end in an R, no more than 8 letters.

  • Pacifier
  • Paladin
  • Panzer
  • Paradox
  • Passenger
  • Preceptor
  • Power <—- Saito mentioned this one!
  • Prancer
  • Prayer
  • Predator
  • Programmer
  • Protector
  • Punisher

So, long story short, there’s a ton of hype whenever Yoko or NieR is involved. There are going to be jokes thrown around from time to time, but we need to be a little careful not to mistake a reported joke for the truth and then spread that misinformation to others, who likewise perceive it as fact.

Maybe in the end, it doesn’t matter either way. As long as there is HYPE, who cares, hm?

Major thanks to my supporters!

I just wanted to give a huge shout-out to those of you who have ever sent a donation to me via the link at the top of this page. I haven’t used any of those funds and have saved everything in my account for when I might desperately need it.

My current job is coming to an end next week and I am still looking for full-time work from September.

I have been an English teacher in Japan for 14 years and I’ve come to realize that this is pretty much a dead end career for me. I enjoy interacting with my students, but my heart really isn’t in teaching. I get paid enough to live paycheck to paycheck but little else to save. I need something that will allow me to engage my creative side and seriously need to get back to my love of writing.

It’s just very, very hard changing careers at my age in a foreign country while being a woman

I’m trying to work on a couple story pitches for anime/manga/games, but… I have no experience in this and I’m trying to learn as much as I can on my own and by networking and meeting people who do know these things.

I’m very much feeling the pinch right now, especially when I seem to keep getting huge bills that I simply cannot pay (my local government screwed up their city/prefectural taxes this year and even though they normally let you pay the taxes quarterly throughout the year, it’s now installments of three… which comes to an additional $500 bill every other month almost. hahaaha).

In a last-ditch effort to stay afloat, I do have money from my dad’s inheritance that I can withdraw… but I really don’t want to do that if I don’t have to. It’s a major hassle trying to do that from Japan (plus the agent I normally talk to apparently just had a baby and won’t be able to help me!!). *sigh*

But anyway, thank you very much to those who’ve given anything in the past year or more. It’s really going to help me this month!! I’m sorry I can’t do much more than say thank you right now, but hopefully if I can get my career turned in the right direction, I can start getting more involved with this site and more again. Please send me your good vibes to get through this next month or so… I think emotionally I’m really going to need it. lol

THANK YOU!!

Thank You to My Supporters! My New Printer/Scanner!!

As you may or may not know, I had a Go Fund Me page set up to help me get a new scanner, and due to the various security requirements, it took me longer than expected to actually access any of the donations I had received. I have since been able to work that part out to finally get a new scanner! YAY!

I didn’t completely make the amount I was hoping for, but am beyond humbled by the kindness shown to me by fans. I certainly hope that I can continue to provide interesting insights into the overall Yokoverse and other fun stuff going on in Japan. <3

For anyone who’s interested, this is what I purchased with the help from the donations received. This is not exactly a scanner, but it is both a printer and scanner combined (I actually needed both!). I got an Epson Colorio for about $200!

Here’s a brief example of the prints and a scan that it can do! The below prints of two Outcast posters were merely color prints whereas the NieR:Automata print was the result of a printed scan of my own copy of the Strategy Guide.

Pretty damn nice, if I don’t say so myself!! It’s been well over 8 years since I’ve had my own printer! Now I won’t have to go visit the Internet Cafe as much merely to print stuff out!!

Again, I want to thank all those who have sent in donations to help me with my scanner issue. I have since taken down the link to the Go Fund Me page since I am no longer in the need of a new scanner, but for anyone else who may feel compelled to help me with this site, I would be very grateful for your support!! If you would like to help out, please take a look at the Paypal link that is included at the top righthand side of the main page here. Thank you!! <3

Gearing Up for TGS 2016!

Like every year around this time since I moved to East Japan, I need to think what to wear to TGS.

One thing that’s important to understand about TGS is that… the crowds are insane. Imagine the last train from Shinjuku on a Friday or Saturday night, but way worse.

I’m not a crowd person. I don’t like to be squished between sweaty strangers who are trying to make it to a certain booth for free stuff. I’m not a cosplayer who spends the night in town so they can get up early and get in line to change into their costumes. I’m just an average, semi-otaku, anime/game freak. Nothing special about me, but I do occasionally want to show my appreciation for the series and titles that I love.

Last year, I brought two costumes to play around in:

I first went semi-dressed as a female Kung Fury so that I wouldn’t have to wait in line to put anything on… and I brought a small suitcase with my 2B costume to change into later. Apparently, I got the the venue a little later than expected and walked around longer than I thought as Kung Fury that… there really wasn’t any time to switch over to 2B. orz I really don’t know why I tried at all.

So, this year I was thinking what I should do. I don’t have the patience to try any actual cosplay this time around, but I still wanted to do something fun… so I thought, why not get a custom made T-Shirt with something NieR related?

Back in January, I asked a friend of mine on DeviantArt to illustrate a couple characters for me. One was, of course, 2B from the up-coming NieR:Automata, and the other was an illustrated version of my YoRHa OC, No34, that I cosplayed back in 2014 for Halloween. Here’s what she came up with:

Shortly after going to see the first run of Yoko Taro’s stage play YoRHa, I thought up my own character, with stats and her own backstory.

You can read more on YoRHa No34 and view more of my crazy cosplay photos of her here.

Long story short, I just received the T-Shirt that I had custom made… and I’m really happy with it! I still need to try it on and take a couple pics, but… That will have to be a little later. ^^
