Terranigma Ranks #2 Most Wanted Game to be Remade | Inside Games

Terranigma – Enix / Quintet – 1995

Several days ago, Inside Games released a questionnaire for users to pick their most favorite game they’d like to see remade in the modern age, on modern systems. Not surprisingly enough, Terranigma ranked #2 above Xenogears and even the classic Chrono Trigger!

Considering the fact that Chrono Trigger has already received multiple re-releases and remakes, I tend to think that it shouldn’t even been considered for this list, but since it was an open-source questionnaire by users, it makes sense that it made it to the top five. Here’s the complete list of finalists:

  1. Kirby Air Ride
  2. Terranigma
  3. Xenogears
  4. Chrono Trigger
  5. Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies

Inside Games also included several comments from users about each game. Here’s a translation of what fans of Terranigma said:

  • From the same time as countless other masterpieces, this SFC action RPG is unfortunately one that tends to be overlooked. This is a magnificent story you should experience at least once and cry to. The music matches the story very well and is the best. By all means, I would like to see its profound story given new life on modern systems.
  • I was most impressed by the story, music, graphics, and world view. It’s been over 20 years since I played it, but it’s a masterpiece that I don’t think any other game quite surpasses it.
  • I have never cried so much than when I played this game. The scenario, music, and character designs are all wonderful!
  • Among the games I’ve played in my life, this is one that left strong, lasting impression on me. Since we’re only able to play it on the original hardware of the time, it’s extremely difficult for anyone to play it now.
  • Although the music, graphics, scenario, etc. are all the best masterpieces of the time, it hasn’t even been ported yet. It’s a game that makes you think about nature and humanity’s impact on the world, so I want modern children and young people to play it.
  • The visual, story, game design, and BGM are all of high quality, and if it can–at the very least–be ported, people of all ages can enjoy playing it. At that time, games were expensive and there was little advertisement, so many people where were elementary and junior high-aged students at the time didn’t even know about it. I’d very much like you to play it.

Additionally, this is what Inside Gamer said in their brief comment about the game related to the above questionnaire:

The Action RPG Terranigma, developed by the now-defunct game developer Quintet, won second place by a small margin.

This game is often referred to as part of the “Quintet Trilogy” along with Soul Blazer and Illusion of Gaia (both sold by Enix, now Square Enix).

As the [original] title suggests, it tells a magnificent story about the creation of the world with the theme of “Genesis” as seen in the Bible. As expressed in the voices of our readers, behind the acclaim of the game, it’s unfortunately hidden between other famous masterpieces of the time such as Chrono Trigger, Dragon Quest VI, and Secret of Mana 3, all released the same year [in 1995]. There were other voices who lamented that there is currently no other way to play the game than on the original hardware.

This questionnaire comes on the heels of the petition to get Terranigma digitally released on modern systems not to mention other activities like the solo Terranigma art exhibition by character designer Fujiwara Kamui.

The questionnaire received a total of 1310 votes, with Terranigma winning 67 of them. The #1 ranked game received only 4 more votes than Terranigma.
