We knew the end was coming, but now we know the end is closer than we thought.
In a recent tweet by the Big GanGan official account, they told us that Yukiko Yokoo will be illustrating her “Thou Shalt Die” chibi comic strips one last time for the 9th Volume to be released on March 25. In one strip, Mashiro and Kuroi talk about this being the last time for Yukiko’s “Thou Shalt Die” segment, mentioning that the 10th and final volume of the manga series will not include another since they are generally published during breaks.
The Last Episode
Kuroi: Choistar!*
Mashiro: What’s with that greeting?
Kuroi: Feels like we finally reached the climax of the story, huh?
Mashiro: (What’s my fate?) I wonder what’ll happen to Mashiro…
Kuroi: The 10th volume will be the end of this story.
Mashiro: WHAT!?
Kuroi: And there won’t be another “Shalt Die” segment, so this is the last.
Mashiro: WHHHHAHAAAAAAATTTTTTT!?
* It’s unclear to me what “choistar” (チョイスター) is supposed to mean.
It’s super sad to see the manga come to an end, but I’m also really excited to see what horrors still await for our characters. Last month we got Chapter 53 and it was stated that they’ll take a break this month, which is why they’re releasing the final episode of Yukiko’s “Shalt Die” comic strip. That means Volume 10 will likely have between 5-7 chapters, so maybe they’ll try to wrap up the series by Chapter 60.
The catch phrase for Volume 9 is:
Nonnegotiable “youth” and “hopes” for the next generation
This is slightly curious to me because we know the series has discussed kids with special abilities procreating to create even stronger individuals with powers. It would be interesting if these kids turn out to be important later on down the road. I’m still hoping for an anime series or something similar for this manga. I guess we shall see!
Pre-orders for Volume 9 are available through Amazon here. There will also be multiple bonus items from various stores:
- Animate – Mini shikishi
- Gamers – Bromide
- Tora no Ana – Mini booklet
- Melon Books – Illustration card
- WonderGOO – Postcard
Various online digital retailers also have a so-called “illustration data” as a bonus item when you purchase the book. More information on the release fare can be found here.
Also a bit of [additional] sad news, the event that was scheduled for the release of Volume 9 has been cancelled due to fears regarding Covid-19. So sad! Maybe they’ll reschedule or perhaps have more events for the end of the series later.
