Tyrann’s Ancestry

Yura Masayoshi (Tyrann), Illustrated by D.K

I was recently reminded something about Tyrann that may or may not have a greater significance in the future.

In the DOD World Inside book, page 241, Yoko Taro was asked to discuss more information about who Tyrann was prior to becoming a Gestalt. I’m not going to get into his background as the human Yura Masayoshi and all the crap that he did, but there’s one thing that Yoko Taro states here that is very interesting:

“Tyrann’s ancestor is hidden somewhere in ‘Drakengard’.
It might be wise to have another look.”

  • NOTE: I remember people were saying that Yura’s ancestor is in DOD2, but this is *incorrect*. He specifically said DOD1.

Now, I don’t believe this has been discussed much on English sites, but there are a few Japanese sites that give some interesting possibilities.

One site was suggesting that since Caim and Angel came into NieR’s world through a portal, they would be the only possible ancestors. Obviously, Angel’s a dragon, so she is not possible. So then what about Caim? Sure, maybe, but… he’s kinda dead by the end of that fight, as far as I recall… ;|

The other site gave a couple more plausible ideas:

  1. A Scarface jet pilot
  2. A character from a Weapon Story

Given Yura’s connection to the military, #1 could very well be possible. I’ll have to read through the Weapon Stories again to see if anything seems like it could be a reference to his ancestry… but this could also be a strong possibility.

A second bit of speculation that I’ve been thinking about for a while now deals with connecting Yoko Taro’s manga series “Thou Shalt Not Die // Kimi Shi ni Tamou Koto Nakare” with NieR… and possibly to Tyrann himself.

  • I’m speculating that not only does Kimi Shini take place within the DOD / NieR universe, but also… that Kuroi *is* Yura Masayoshi.

Let’s take a look at the scenario in which one of the jet pilots was Yura’s father to satisfy Yoko’s statement that an ancestor is in Drakengard.

If Yura’s in his thirties during the incident in 2033–let’s just assume he’s 33 to make it easier to imagine–that would make him 3 years old during the 6.12 disaster when Caim, Angel, and the Mother Angel appear above Shinjuku. Skip several years to around 2016 when KimiShini takes place… Yura would be about 16, probably a 2nd year HS student. And…this lines up perfectly with Kuroi:

yura-kuroi-age

Getting into more speculation regarding Kuroi… We have not seen or heard anything about his father, but we know that his mother hates or despises Kuroi for some reason. Could this be because his father died in the 6.12 incident and left her to raise a “gifted” child on her own?

There have been no official images of Yura, but the NieR character designer D.K *has* illustrated him a couple times just for fun, so I’d like to think that they’re at least semi-official. xD Anyway, every time he’s drawn Yura, he’s always missing an eye like the image above. I can’t help but use this to make yet another connection to Kuroi…since he loses an eye at the end of Chapter 18 in KimiShini. Of course, this could just be coincidence, but… I can’t help but count the similarities.

The only thing that I don’t particularly like about speculating that Yura = Kuroi is that… Yura appears to be a massive jackass coward who runs away just to protect himself. I can see Kuroi doing all the other bad stuff that Yura does… but to do anything necessary to save his life and/or live longer? Hmm, no. Kuroi’s been okay with and prepared to die several times. I don’t see that ever changing… unless Mashiro gives him another order: to live, no matter what. Oh, no…

So anyway, this is just one idea that I have been mulling over. I’m sure there are all sorts of other possibilities regarding Yura’s connection to DOD. What do you think?
